Weekend in Newport

I was in Newport earlier this month for work and had such a great time being back on the east coast. I hadn’t been to Newport in years so it was fun to explore the city and check out some new spots. We stayed at Hammet’s Hotel which was in such a great location in the heart of town and super close to the wharf and restaurants. I loved being able to walk to so many things.

Here are some of my recommendations, as well as more I received from others…

NEWPORT MANSIONS

If you’ve never been to Newport before, you have to book some tours at their famous seaside “cottages” (mansions). Built by families like the Vanderbilts as summer homes, they are truly spectacular to see. The Breakers is the most famous, which I had seen before so we went to Marble House and Rosecliff. Be sure to pack a pair of airpods or headphones so you can do the audio tour on your phone.

THE CLIFF WALK

Another must in Newport is to walk along the Cliff Walk, which follows the coastline and allows you to see all of the Newport mansions from the back. If you don’t have time to do tours of the mansions, this is a great way to see a bit of them.

COTTAGE & GARDEN

I didn’t have a ton of time for shopping, but a few followers recommended Cottage & Garden to me and I loved it so much I had to make two visits! Such an amazing assortment of decor, antiques and garden essentials. I love going into shops that have things I haven’t seen before and this shop is 100% that. Still dying over their topiary collection!

tennis hall of fame

I’m not a tennis player (although I want to learn!), but we made a quick stop into the Tennis Hall of Fame and it was so cool to see their old fashioned courts—so chic! Definitely worth stopping in if you are over in the Bellevue Avenue area and it’s free to just walk around. And while you are there, definitely stop into Newport Lamp & Shade Company—a great spot for lampshades and other home decor.

castle hill

We had drinks at Castle Hill Inn before dinner one night and you can’t beat the views from here. Such a gorgeous place to sit and watch the sunset. A beautiful place to stay too!

white horse tavern

Highly recommend a meal at White Horse Tavern—it’s the oldest operating restaurant in the United States (since 1673!) and the 10th oldest in the world. The building and interiors are so fun to experience and the food is amazing.

bowen’s wharf

Bowen’s Wharf is right next to Hammet’s Hotel and has tons of restaurants, bars and shops to explore. We grabbed a drink at one of the outdoor bars and loved watching the sailboats go in and out. It’s also a beautiful place to watch the sunset.
