Home Progress

There has been a lot of interest in how our house is coming along, so I thought I would share some more about what we’ve been doing and some future plans…

We’ve been doing so much “invisible” work at our house and are finally starting to acquire more furniture and decor, which is really exciting! Since moving in, we have done electrical work, termite repairs and added gutters. We also had to get a refrigerator and added an HVAC system, which has been an amazing upgrade for us!

As I’ve mentioned before, we are moving at a slower pace and really taking our time making decisions so progress is a bit slow. But I am loving the process and spending time in the space before making decisions. We’re primarily focused on our living room and now that all of the HVAC work is done, we are going to finally be able to start working on things like painting! I’m still a bit torn on what I want to do and have been testing out different samples.

We finally ordered our new sofa, which I’m really excited about! We are having it custom made through a local upholsterer in the cream performance fabric pictured above. It’s going to look like the below sofa from Restoration Hardware. We were going to order from RH, but their timelines are so crazy long because of Covid and it ended up being way more fun going the custom route and getting to pick out fabric, etc! And it ended up not being much different in price.

We got two new pieces of vintage furniture that we’re in love with. One is our entry cabinet, which we found at a local thrift shop. It’s an old sewing cabinet (the sides open on top and are super deep) if you are on the hunt for something similar. A few followers found similar pieces on FB Marketplace! The second vintage piece we got is my rattan desk! I am obsessed with it and cannot wait to start using it. I am having a custom glass top made for it to protect the rattan and offer structural support. I found the desk through my friend’s instagram account and had it shipped from NYC to LA ($$$). But if you’re in the New York / Tri-State area, I’d highly recommend giving them a follow if you’re looking for vintage pieces!

Another new addition is our rug in our living room. It’s a great quality natural jute rug at an amazing price and it looks good with any style decor. Unfortunately, the “natural” colorway of it blends in a bit too much with our floors, so I’m waiting for the lighter “off-white” colorway to arrive. Hoping that works better in our space!

I’m having so much fun collecting fabric samples and playing around with different schemes for our rooms. Above are some elements I’m considering for the living room—going to be bringing in some blue into the mix too!

One of the reasons the interior progress has been slow is because I’ve been so focused on our backyard! Being in LA, we are spending so much time outside, especially right now when we have people over so we really wanted to focus on getting everything set up out there. We absolutely love our dining table set, which is from IKEA. It’s super long and I love that it feels more traditional. I think they’ll be bringing it back soon when spring / outdoor furniture season starts. I just got this little side table which completed our seating area perfectly. I added some dwarf olive bushes and recently potted them in these planters. I learned that olive plants typically like to be in terracotta, but they seem to be doing okay so far because I added a lot of rocks / perlite to the soil.

We tore out some old bushes around our patio which opened up our yard and went through a few different ideas of what to do. Ultimately, we decided to fill the majority of the space with grass as we will do a bigger backyard renovation in a year or two. One thing we are doing now though is adding in a raised bed for flowers and some veggies! I have been admiring Kristin Martin’s garden forever (below) and she was nice enough to share her source for her willow edging and obelisks. I can’t wait until we get ours built and in place—hopefully this weekend!

I have been busy sowing seeds over the last few weeks and it’s been so satisfying and fun watching everything sprout up. I’ve been buying lots of terracotta pots and planting various flower seeds in them and can’t wait to have them around our patio and house. Locally, I love going to Rolling Greens and Armstrong to look for pots and planters. Rolling Greens has a great selection of my favorite aged terracotta pots from Campo De’Fiori. I also love Terrain’s selection of pots—I have these scalloped pots, these ribbed saucers and these pots are similar to the aged ones I have below.
