Interior Envy: Jeremy Clark - Birmingham Showhouse

As an aspiring interior designer (feels so weird to say that!), I love coming across other up and coming designers and seeing their work and process. I was so incredibly inspired by Jeremy Clark’s recent room in the Birmingham, AL Showhouse that I had to chat with him and share with you all. His attention to detail and layers of neutral patterns are so refreshing…

IN HIS WORDS…

I am the founder of my eponymous firm, Jeremy D. Clark Studio, a full-service design studio specializing in luxury residential, commercial, and hospitality projects from coast to coast. I quietly opened the doors of my studio in the Spring of 2019 upon spending several years in Nashville under the direction of industry leaders.

I gravitate toward spaces that are foremost timeless, but excel at tailoring each residential space to honor both the lifestyle and persona of my clients. Whether it’s global influences, collected art, or the juxtaposition of texture and color, I incorporate the nuances of the storytelling that is design, and allow them to play out in thoughtful, unexpected ways. This narrative is developed alongside the many ways my client lives to create expertly appointed spaces.

My current residential projects range across the country from Mountain Brooke, AL and Atlanta, GA to Cashiers, NC and Key West, FL.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SPACE?

The space I created was inspired by the marriage of all things handmade and artisan-led. Additionally, the tongue-in-cheek desire to play off the location of the home being in Hollywood, and the glamour that ensues with a location bearing that name. The high-gloss ceiling and trim sets the tone and evokes a masculine mood, juxtaposed with the softness of the Gracie Studio chinoiserie paper that adorns the walls. Those finishes coupled with a canopied bed replete with two of my favorites: silk and stripes, along with a William Kent-inspired console table, and a handmade grotto mirror—speak to my personal aesthetic that a collected space tells the most exceptional story.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR SPACE?

That’s nearly impossible to decide! It’s a toss up between the Olive Silhouette Gracie wall covering and the handcrafted grotto mirror from Sheema Muneer, a Texas-based artisan. A thread I kept throughout the space was an emphasis on the handmade—pieces that were storied. While there were many contributors to this in space, these were the two that came first and foremost, and to which I’m most attached.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH CREATING YOUR SPACE?

The floorplan, without a doubt. The room was small and surrounded with numerous doors and windows that limited the placement of a bed. Once I incorporated the bed into the floorplan in a manner I was pleased with, the rest followed.

YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO LOOK FOR INTERIOR INSPIRATION?

Travel is the most fulfilling inspiration, but when that’s not in the cards—I look to my favorite books or Instagram. I love Instagram as it’s such a fantastic tool to curate exactly who you follow—and who share similar interests, aesthetics, and more.

WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW?

The holidays are such a festive time—and now more than ever I find it most fascinating to see the color combinations and pattern play with holiday decor, tabletop settings–even the ribbon on wrapped presents! It’s joyful yet elegant.

ANY FUN NEW PROJECTS?

Yes! Just this December I completed the design of a new contemporary womenswear boutique—Le Weekend—that was extremely exciting to be involved in. It’s the first concept from founder Courtenay Bullock, and her aim was to create a minimal, clean canvas that had a European flair. In many ways, the design is quite the opposite of the showcase room I created—which was excellent timing, and extremely refreshing. In addition to projects in Birmingham, AL, I am also completing projects in Key West, FL, Atlanta, GA, and Cashiers, NC.

ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING INTERIOR DESIGNERS?

Well—honestly, I feel as if I’m still aspiring myself, ha! I’m not quite sure what the moment is that I’ll feel “accomplished”, but I do feel confident I am heading in the right direction. My best advice, and one that I aim to follow, is to take note of the lessons learned with each project: what can be done differently? Better? More effectively? I hope to never stop learning and honing in on my process, and would advise others growing in the field to do the same.

Thank you so much Jeremy!
